Costa Rica Fishing Charters Basics
Any vacation destination that boasts miles and miles of coastline is bound to be an ideal place for a fishing trip. That’s certainly true of Costa Rica. Anglers love both the waters of the Pacific and Caribbean and eagerly make use of the many Costa Rica Fishing Charters available to vacationers.
Some fishermen travel to Costa Rica specifically for the fishing experience while some visit for other reasons, learn of the great fishing, and decide to spend a day or two on the water. Booking one of the many available Costa Rica fishing charters can also be a terrific family activity as both young and old enjoy fishing, and in these waters that are chock full of fish, everyone’s sure to catch something.
Where to Fish and What You’ll Catch
While charters are plentiful throughout the country, some areas boast better fishing then others. Thankfully, these highly-experienced boat captains and their staff know exactly where to take visitors for some of the best fishing experiences in Central America. As a matter of fact, some are so confident that you’ll catch something that they’ll refund your money if you don’t nab a fish of some sort.
Here are a few prime fishing spots:
The Northern Pacific – In the northern part of the country near the border with Nicaragua, the main sport fishing center is pretty Flamingo Beach in Guanacaste. You’ll also find charters at Coco’s Beach, Tamarindo, Ocotal, Portero, and Brasilito. Tamarindo provides the shortest ride out to the deep water beyond the Continental Shelf.
In this region of Costa Rica, marlin and sailfish can be caught all year long. Tuna are most plentiful from August to October, while the peak months for wahoo are July and August. Between November and March, you’ll find lots of roosterfish.
The Central Pacific – Quepos is the town where you’ll find many marinas in this region known as the Central Pacific. Most avid fishermen are eager to snag the billfish that are plentiful here from December through April and it’s just a short ride out to the blue waters where these fish are found. Anglers will also find blue and black marlin, sailfish, tuna, and wahoo.
The South Pacific – This part of the country isn’t overrun with fishing charters but there are a few modern marinas in the town of Golfito. Sailing the waters of the south will put you amidst marlin, huge tuna, amberjack, grouper, sailfish, roosterfish, dorado, and snook.
The Caribbean – Tarpon is especially plenty on the eastern coast, especially from November to May. When the ocean is flat, fishing near the shore results in catching lots of kingfish, Spanish and Cero mackerel, Jack Crevalle, and barracuda.

Booking these Costa Rica fishing charter packages not only save time but also money, as you’ll often get preferred pricing on lodging and airfare when you book everything together.
