San Jose is the largest and most populated of all Costa Rica cities. It also is the most central of them, therefore the location enables direct easy access routes, to all different parts of the country. The city is situated in the heart of the Meseta central or Central valley the most northern part of the region of San Jose province. Due to the climate being extremely pleasant, most of the year, San Jose receives thousands of visitors, most of whom seek out the coffee covered mountains in the highlands and with the view looking down into the lush green valleys below it is not surprising. When traveling round this beautiful region, do be aware that some of the roads may have the odd pothole, but it is well worth the odd bump or two, to be able to get some fantastic photos and to try some of the local food.
Alajuela is probably the second largest city in size. The Juan Santamaria airport is only a few minutes away from the Alajula province. There is a plentiful supply of bus routes making easy access going in and out. The city center is worth a visit to view the impressive red dome church, and only a few minutes away to the parque central, where a lot of the locals all gather and mingle together, to sit and relax. A great place to shop, is to go west from the park to find the central market which is so big it takes up a whole citie block. Alajuela is so laid back and with the people being so friendly it is well worth a visit.
One of Costa Rica cities which is full of history and culture, is Cartago and was actually the first capital of Costa Rica. When visiting Cartago it is well worth checking out the 16th century ruins, which is steeped in history, and delving into the past you will find out amazing history from centuries past. While visiting Cartago have a look at the rural villages with quaint little houses and aged buildings with wonderful colors of wood. If you are a person that enjoys hiking or trekking to the south you can visit, Parque National Chirripo, which will lead you to climb one of the highest peaks in Central America. Also, don’t forget, a really good pair of hiking boots are a must. Having a pleasant climate and many places to explore Cartago is another Costa Rica city to consider.
Approximately 10km north of San Jose city, you will reach the large Costa Rica city of the name Heredia. You get the feeling in Heredia that it has a small city feel to it, the reason being that you get away from all the traffic and humdrum that you find in the capital. There are many attractions on offer around Heredia and for those that are into volcanoes, Braulio Carrillo National park is worth a visit. Inside there you will find the Volcan Barva for those who wish to you are aloud to climb this. Starting at the base and climbing the lush green pastures, till the higher you go climbing the majestic cloud forests.
One of the many things to consider when choosing a visit to one of Costa Rica cities, is they are all so beautiful in their own unique way. Some are steeped in history, while others have outstanding churches to go and visit, or lush green mountains to climb, there is something on offer for everyone.
